Visit from Mr Lawlor the "Bee Keeper"

On the 19th of March we had a visit from a 'Bee Keeper', Mr Lawlor.  Mr Lawlor spoke to us about amazing bees!  He brought in a plastic and wooden replica bee hive buzzing with bees for us to see!  We have been lucky enough to be able to keep it in our classroom for a few days.
The Beehive we have had in our class!
We have been watching the bees busy at work in the classroom.  They are amazing creatures.  Mr Lawlor told us lots of facts about bees.  Here is some that we were able to remember...

-The Queen bee can lay 2000 eggs per day!
-The worker bees are female and they do all the work.  They clean, feed the Queen, collect the pollen, make the wax hexagons that make up the hive and guard the hive!  They also carry the dead bees away and drop them away from the hive!  Gosh those female bees work hard..... Sound familiar!
-The drones are the male bees and they have one job to do.  When they are no longer needed, the female bees push them out of the hive!
-The Queen bee has a smell significant to her hive.  If she is happy and healthy she produces alot of smell.  If something is wrong her smell becomes faint and the hive goes into panic!  They then begin to nurture a new Queen as they instinctly know something is wrong!
-Bees have an extremely important job to do.  They collect pollen but they also spread it which allows flowers to be pollinated.  If there were no bees we would not have fruit and vegetables!  They also make honey which is very good for us.

And lastly, the fact that all the children could remember... When the bees need to poo they fly away from the hive and let it go!  Look out below!

Here is a frame that goes into the bee hive.

Here is a junior bee keeper suit!

Here is Mr Lawlor training a junior bee keeper!

The bees have made hexagon shaped wax cavities!
Mr Lawlor done a fantastic job talking to us in a way we could easily understand.  He brought in lots of things to show us to help our understanding.

We have written reports on bees since Mr Lawlor visited us.  We started with a title, then wrote how bees help us.  We finished with a description of bees.  Thanks Mr Lawlor!  We have loved having the bees in Room 3!
